Recycled water utilization and salinity in a very large private plantation
- Country: Cyprus
- Lead Partner: THE CYPRUS PHASSOURI PLANTATIONS CO. LIMITED (CPPC)
- Other Partners: Cyprus Universit of Technology (CUT)
- Sector: Mediterranean
Pilot #5 is set in the Cyprus Phassouri Plantations, the largest citrus plantation in Cyprus, covering approximately 560 hectares in a semi-arid region near Akrotiri Salt Lake. This area faces significant challenges due to limited irrigation water resources, poor groundwater quality from salinity caused by seawater intrusion, and past groundwater overexploitation. With average annual precipitation of only 370 mm, citrus crops—including oranges, mandarins, lemons, and grapefruits—struggle to achieve optimal yields compared to other regions with similar conditions.
