Cambium – community and eco-village
Cambium – Leben in Gemeinschaft is an innovative eco-village project located in Fehring, Austria. Founded in 2014, Cambium is dedicated to creating a sustainable community through the transformation of a former military base into a vibrant living and working space. With a focus on long-term ecological, social, and economic sustainability, Cambium fosters a collaborative environment for around 40 adults and 15 children. The community applies regenerative agriculture, circular building technologies, and innovative solutions in areas such as soil restoration, water management, and organic farming. Cambium also serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices in sustainable living, aiming to become a model for future communities in Austria and beyond.
Activities in the project
Cambium – Leben in Gemeinschaft is implementing pilot#4 on a 4-hectare farm, consisting of orchards, grassland, and 1,500 m² of market gardening. The farm grows a variety of crops, including fruits, vegetables, cereals, and legumes. The pilot focuses on developing and advancing existing water and nutrient recycling systems and aims to become a role model for circular economy approaches in agriculture. Cambium will apply innovative circular and nature-based solutions such as rainwater harvesting, storage, and reuse in agriculture, as well as liquid-solid separation of wastewater. The liquid fraction will be treated in green walls and reused for fertigation. Additionally, Cambium will explore innovative composting methods for sewage sludge and the metabolisation of nutrients in biomass. Cambium also strives to inspire local farmers, youth, and networks by promoting understanding and participation in sustainable agricultural practices, helping to disseminate knowledge of circular economy principles.
