Pilot #4

Ecological Agriculture and Sustainable Water Recycling at Farm Level

Pilot #4 is based at Cambium, a community and eco-village in Fehring, Austria, covering 4 hectares orchards and grassland, 1.500 m² market gardening. At Cambium, sustainable and innovative agricultural practices are promoted through circular economic approaches and on-farm water recycling.

Residents from the eco-village cultivate a diverse range of products including crops, fruits, vegetables, cereals, and legumes, forming a dynamic and integrated food production ecosystem.

Cambium is in close collaboration with neighboring organic farmers and local networks. Special focus is placed on the reuse of water and nutrients from non-conventional sources aligning the project with the site’s unique potential as a hub for social, ecological, and economic sustainability.

Objectives

Advancing Water and Nutrient Recycling

Develop existing systems of water and nutrient recycling

Circular Economy in Practice

Become a role model for circular economy approaches

Empowering Communities Through Sustainability

Dissemination and motivation of local networks, farmers and youth, in understanding and participating in sustainable agricultural practices

Technology in Action

Rainwater harvesting, storage and reuse in agriculture

Harvesting, storing, and reusing rainwater alongside liquid-solid wastewater separation and green wall treatment systems for sustainable fertigation.

Innovative Organic Waste Management

Composting of sewage sludge and nutrient metabolisation from biomass to enhance soil health and close nutrient loops.

Atmospheric Water Condensation

Application of agro-ecology principles, SAPs (Super Absorbent Polymers), and other water-retaining materials to improve soil structure and water efficiency.

Why GEORGIA Stands Out

GEORGIA is redefining rural/peri-urban agriculture at the farm level by creating fully integrated water and nutrient cycles. Here’s how GEORGIA supports sustainable food production in rural/peri-urban settings:

Model for Water & Nutrient Circularity

Promote the ability to create closed-loop systems using every available water and nutrient source.

Educational and Replicable Rural Hub

GEORGIA’s Pilot serves as an educational platform, inspiring similar rural or peri-urban agriculture initiatives and connecting new rural and peri-urban residents with sustainable food production.

Innovative Dew Collection and Agro-Ecology Techniques

Pioneering water management solutions are introduced, serving as a replicable model for future rural and peri-urban agricultural sites.
