Meet the GEORGIA Project Partners: Driving Innovation in Smart Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture 

The GEORGIA project brings together 16 distinguished partners from across Europe, each contributing specialised knowledge and innovative solutions to support the transition towards smart irrigation, efficient water use, and sustainable agriculture. This diverse, interdisciplinary consortium works collectively to address challenges related to climate change, resource efficiency, and agricultural resilience by integrating cutting-edge technologies, nature-based solutions, and advanced farming practices.

Let’s meet the organisations behind GEORGIA and discover their specific roles:

A Greek high-tech company specialising in automation, system control, precision agriculture, IoT, and cloud computing. Synelixis coordinates the GEORGIA project, ensuring seamless technological integration and effective overall management.

Netcompany-Intrasoft is a leading European IT solutions and services company, with expertise in system architecture, advanced application development, integration services, information portal management, and project management. Within GEORGIA, Netcompany-Intrasoft plays a crucial role in defining the technology and integration management, ensuring that the technical strategy and development roadmap align with the project’s objectives and innovation targets. Their expertise guarantees a seamless and forward-thinking approach to smart irrigation, water management, and sustainable agriculture.

Gruppo FOS is an innovative Italian company with a strong international outlook. The company specializes in designing, developing, and marketing digital services and solutions that integrate software applications, hardware devices, and network infrastructures, ensuring efficient data management and protection. Within GEORGIA, Gruppo FOS will contribute its expertise by leading the socio/techno/economic analysis and spearheading efforts to extend the Concept Digital Twin (CDT) to regenerative agriculture, enhancing sustainability and innovation in the sector.

Terra Littera is a consulting firm from Novi Sad, Serbia, specialised in providing advisory services in the field of agricultural financing. Terra Littera is dedicated to empowering farmers by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and environmental protection. Within GEORGIA, Terra Littera leads one of the project’s pilot initiatives, covering 205 hectares of land divided into two parcels, both equipped with center-pivot irrigation systems. Their mission is to evaluate existing and emerging agricultural practices from societal, regulatory, and technological perspectives, ensuring the right conditions for the adoption and scaling of innovative solutions in smart irrigation and sustainable farming.

AgrovarCC is an agritech company dedicated to optimizing regenerative farming through AI-driven digital technology. The company is on a mission to revolutionize farming by leveraging cutting-edge technology and scientific insights. Its AI-powered platform provides tailored recommendations, helping farmers enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and sequester carbon.  Within GEORGIA, AgrovarCC leads one of the project’s pilots, advancing sustainable farming in southern Bulgaria. The pilot is set near Dobrich, Haskovo—a region known for its temperate continental climate and agricultural diversity.

INASO-PASEGES is a civil nonprofit organization established in 2005 in Athens by the Panhellenic Confederation of Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives, which stands out for its representation of 640,000 farmers and approximately 1,000 cooperative organizations and companies across all levels. Within GEORGIA, INASO-PASEGES will play a key role in organizing, implementing, and supervising one of the project’s pilots, focused on recycled water utilization on Santorini island, in collaboration with the Wine Cooperative “SantoWines.”

THE CYPRUS PHASSOURI PLANTATIONS CO LTD is the largest plantation in Cyprus, covering approximately 560 hectares. Located in the Phasouri area, this key actor represents the majority of irrigated cropland within the Polemidia catchment. The company is primarily engaged in the cultivation, production, packaging, and export of citrus. Under the GEORGIA project, THE CYPRUS PHASSOURI PLANTATIONS CO LTD will lead one of the pilots focused on the use of recycled water and the management of salinity in citrus cultivation.

INASO-PASEGES is a civil nonprofit organization established in 2005 in Athens by the Panhellenic Confederation of Unions of Agricultural Cooperatives, which stands out for its representation of 640,000 farmers and approximately 1,000 cooperative organizations and companies across all levels. Within GEORGIA, INASO-PASEGES will play a key role in organizing, implementing, and supervising one of the project’s pilots, focused on recycled water utilization on Santorini island, in collaboration with the Wine Cooperative “SantoWines.”

Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is a public university established in Limassol, Cyprus, in 2003. Today, it comprises six faculties, offering high-quality education and research aligned with international standards. Within the GEORGIA project, CUT collaborates with THE CYPRUS PHASSOURI PLANTATIONS CO LTD and the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions for the efficient and sustainable use of natural resources—such as water and fertilizers. These solutions will be implemented in semi-arid and land-degraded areas across Cyprus, covering at least 10 hectares.

Agricultural University of Athens (AUA) is the third oldest university in Greece. Founded in 1920, AUA has consistently contributed to the Greek and European primary sector across diverse fields such as food quality and safety, water resource conservation, organic farming, renewable energy, biotechnological applications in agriculture, and information and communication technologies. Within the GEORGIA project, AUA brings its expertise in precision agriculture, smart irrigation, and socio-techno-economic analysis, supporting research activities and providing valuable insights.

Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences (UPWr) is one of Poland’s leading academic institutions, conducting extensive research in Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Veterinary Sciences. Within the GEORGIA project, the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences team will lead the testing of biological water-absorbing geocomposites (BioWAG) – an innovative solution aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture by enhancing water conservation and improving soil health. Notably, UPWr will also coordinate the seven pilot demonstrations where GEORGIA technologies will be validated and showcased.

ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence (ECoE) is an autonomous Centre of Excellence in Earth Observation, space technology, and geospatial analysis. Located in Cyprus, ECoE’s mission is to conduct both basic and applied research to enhance the understanding, management, and monitoring of natural resources and infrastructure. Within the GEORGIA project, ECoE will retrieve and analyse geospatial information from satellite data to support smart irrigation. In collaboration with THE CYPRUS PHASSOURI PLANTATIONS CO LTD and Cyprus University of Technology, it will also explore and demonstrate solutions for the efficient and sustainable use of resources in Cyprus.

alchemia-nova is an Austrian research and innovation institute committed to environmental sustainability, aimed at advancing nature-based solutions and circular economy practices that support the transition to climate-smart, resilient, and sustainable societies. Within the GEORGIA project, alchemia-nova brings deep expertise in designing, optimizing, and implementing circular economy strategies and nature-based solutions (NBS) for efficient water treatment and reuse. The team leads efforts on circular water management and NBS at both farm and catchment levels, contributing to the implementation, monitoring, and the holistic assessment of these solutions.

reframe.food (RFF) is a forward-thinking non-profit organisation committed to transforming the agrifood sector through innovation, technology, and a strong dedication to food sustainability. RFF builds lasting relationships across the food system, working closely with diverse stakeholders to unlock the potential of science and technology in driving economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Within the GEORGIA project, RFF leads the Dissemination, Exploitation & Communication activities, fosters synergies, contributes to policy recommendations, conducts market assessments, and ensures the long-term sustainability of project results.

Water Europe, the recognised voice and promoter of water-related innovation, research, and technology development in Europe. Established by the European Commission as a European Technology Platform, Water Europe is guided in all its activities by its Water Vision, with the ultimate ambition of achieving a Water-Smart Society. Within the GEORGIA project, Water Europe plays a crucial role by providing policy recommendations, promoting sustainability, and ensuring the long-term impact of the project’s outcomes. This is achieved by aligning the results with EU initiatives and engaging with policymakers and other stakeholders.

Cambium – Leben in Gemeinschaft is a pioneering eco‑village and regenerative community founded in a former military barracks, now home to around 50 adults and 25 children. Designed as a regional “lighthouse” for sustainable living, it integrates organic farming, circular resource management, co‑working, and community development. Within GEORGIA, Cambium leads a dedicated pilot, demonstrating community‑scale circular water and nutrient reuse. Their approach employs constructed wetlands, green walls, swales, and permaculture grazing to recycle wastewater and biogas‑derived nutrients—showcasing scalable, distributed water management and permaculture practices.
