Within the framework of the GEORGIA Horizon project, an innovative pilot is exploring how alternative water sources and smart irrigation can support the future of viticulture on the island, while preserving its unique identity and quality.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2174f06 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2174f06\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Vineyard Rooted in Tradition<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-681c7b3 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"681c7b3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>PDO Santorini wines (dry white and Vinsanto) are produced primarily from the indigenous Assyrtiko variety (at least 75% for dry wines and 51% for Vinsanto), in combination with Aidani and Athiri. These native grape varieties, cultivated in volcanic soils, impart high acidity, pronounced minerality, and exceptional quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The pilots are located in Karterados\u2013Chelidonous and in Agios Andreas-Fira, both areas known for cultivating mostly the Assyrtiko, Aidani, Athiri, Mavrotragano and Mandilaria grapevine. These local varieties are deeply adapted to the island\u2019s harsh conditions and have been traditionally grown without irrigation, relying solely on winter rainfall.\u00a0 However, this long-standing practice is under threat. Santorini\u2019s Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and increasingly irregular rainfall, has led to more frequent and prolonged drought periods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The result? Uncertainty in yields and growing pressure on farmers to adapt.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7be1072 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7be1072\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why This Pilot Matters<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74deedb sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74deedb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Each pilot that is impleted by <a href=\"https:\/\/georgia-horizon.eu\/it\/partners\/institouto-agrotikis-kai-synetairistikis-oikonomias-inaso-paseges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INASO<\/a> and Santo Wines Cooperative, focuses on a small section of vineyard, testing solutions that could be scaled across the island. The goal is not only to improve productivity but to do so in a way that is sustainable, resilient, and replicable.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>At its core, the project addresses several urgent needs:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:list --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Securing stable grape production despite climate variability\u00a0<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Reducing dependence on rainfall\u00a0<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Preventing the gradual disappearance of viticulture<\/li>\n<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item -->\n<li>Supporting the long-term viability of the PDO varieties, Assyrtiko, Aidani, Athiri and all the other rare indigenous grape varieties (more than 50 in total) which are also cultivated on the island\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9717728 sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9717728\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Turning Wastewater and Desalinated water into a Resource<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e6d750f sc_fly_static elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e6d750f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>One of the most innovative aspects of the pilot is the reuse of municipal wastewater for irrigation, a circular approach that transforms a local challenge into an opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Instead of relying solely on natural rainfall, the system introduces treated alternative water sources, including municipal wastewater and desalinated water.
